He enjoyed a long association with the Berlin Staasoper and appeared at Covent Garden and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Bohnen, Michael, Ba¯-Bariton, * 2.5.1887 K÷ln, å 26.4.1965 Berlin; seine Stimme erregte schon wShrend seiner Schulzeit erstes Aufsehen. Gesangstudium am K÷lner Konservatorium bei Fritz Steinbach und Richard Dornburg. Debnt 1910 am Opernhaus von Dnsseldorf als Kaspar im +Freischntz½ dort sang er 1910 in der Urauffnhrung der Oper +Stella maris½ von Alfred Kaiser. 1911-14 war er am Hoftheater von Wiesbaden engagiert. Er sprang 1914 an der Berliner Hofoper fnr den erkrankten Paul Knnpfer als Gurnemanz im +Parsifal½ ein und hatte einen sensationellen Erfolg. 1914 Gastspiel in London (Drury Lane Theatre als Ochs im +Rosenkavalier½ unter Sir Thomas Beecham) und bei den Festspielen von Bayreuth als Hunding und Daland. Er wurde zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges Soldat; er grnndete wShrend seiner MilitSrdienstzeit einen 200 Mann starken Soldatenchor, mit dem er in verschiedenen deutschen StSdten auftrat. 1916 wurde er vom MilitSr entlassen und konnte seine Karriere an der Berliner Hofoper wieder aufnehmen, der er bis 1918 angeh÷rte, und an der er auch spSter noch gastierte. 1922 folgte er einem Ruf an die Metropolitan Oper New York, an der er bis 1932 gro¯e Erfolge hatte. Als Antrittsrolle sang er dort den Francesco in der amerikanischen Erstauffnhrung der Oper +Mona Lisa½ von Max von Schillings mit Barbara Kemp, der Gattin des Komponisten, als Partnerin (1.3.1923). Man schStzte ihn in New York im Wagner- wie im italienischen Repertoire seines Fachs und als Mephisto in Gounods +Faust½. An der Metropolitan Oper trug er (in deren Haus in New York) insgesamt 21 verschiedene Partien in 175 Vorstellungen vor; als letzte Rolle sang er dort im April 1932 den Wanderer im +Siegfried½. Der Komponist Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek schrieb fnr ihn seine Oper +Holofernes½, deren Titelrolle er am 27.10.1923 in der Berliner Urauffnhrung (an der Deutschen Oper) sang, auch in der Urauffnhrung von Leo Blechs +Rappelkopf½ in Berlin (1917) wirkte er mit. 1928 h÷rte man ihn in Berlin in der Operette +Casanova½ von Johann Strau¯-Benatzky und dann in einer Anzahl weiterer Operetten-Auffnhrungen. Er wirkte auch in Filmen mit (bereits 1918 in den Stummfilm +Herrin der Erde½ mit Mia May), darunter den Opernfilmen +Tiefland½ und +Der Rosenkavalier½ (als Ochs, wobei der Komponist Richard Strauss dirigierte) und in dem Operettenfilm +Viktoria und ihr Husar½. In den Jahren 1920-22 und 1938 trat er als Gast an der Wiener Staatsoper auf, 1925 an der Oper von Budapest, 1920-22 in der Schweiz an den Theatern von Basel und Bern, 1933 am Teatro Col=n Buenos Aires, 1927 Gastspiel im Haag als Kaspar im +Freischntz½ von Weber. Diese Partie sang er auch 1939 bei den Salzburger Festspielen. Weitere Gastspiele fnhrten ihn nach Frankreich, Spanien und Italien, nach Belgien und Holland, nach Schweden und in die Tschechoslowakei. Er kam nach seinen gro¯en Erfolgen in den USA 1932 nach Deutschland zurnck und war 1935-45 am Deutschen Opernhaus von Berlin engagiert, betStigte sich jetzt aber hauptsSchlich beim Film. 1945-47 Intendant der StSdtischen Oper Berlin; an diesem Haus verabschiedete er sich 1951 als Hans Sachs in den +Meistersingern½ von der Bnhne. – Er war kurze Zeit mit der Sopranistin Mary Lewis (1900-41), spSter mit der TSnzerin La Jana (1905-41) verheiratet. – Machtvolle Stimme von gro¯em Tonumfang und erregender Ausdrucksgewalt, die sowohl im Ba¯- als auch im Baritonfach ein umfangreiches Repertoire meisterte, dazu genialer Darsteller, auch in Buffo-Partien. Sein Repertoire fnr die Bnhne war sehr umfangreich und enthielt u.a. Partien wie den Don Giovanni, den Rocco im +Fidelio½, den Figaro in +Figaros Hochzeit½, den Falstaff in den +Lustigen Weibern von Windsor½ von Nicolai, den Abul Hassan im +Barbier von Bagdad½ von P.
