This is a custom Retro Rails built G Scale replica of a Disneyland USA “Holliday Red” passenger car. The car was created from a brand new high quality LGB passenger gondola car with steel wheels which was then significantly modified via custom painting, professionally produced graphics and hand made fabricated parts. The car features seats arranged all facing the same direction as they are on the actual Disneyland cars–and the seats are painted to closely match the Disney cars. Red and white banners circle the roof and car graphics have been added to match the real thing. An opening was added to the center of the car provide passenger entry and exit. The main feature of this car is the hand made “Disneyland Railroad Holiday” drumhead which adorns the rear of the car and is nearly identical to the Disney train. The brand new LGB box is included with specially produced graphics added to reflect the model’s custom configuration. History of the “Holiday Red” passenger cars: When Disneyland opened in 1955, Walt Disney had created two trains which circled his new park. The first, the Retlaw 1, was a passenger train featuring six enclosed passenger cars. The second, The Retlaw 2, was a freight train consisting of cattle cars, gondolas and a caboose. Despite being a freight train, it was configured to carry passengers as well, but did so a bit awkwardly. The Retlaw 2 cars were eventually modified to be more passenger friendly allowing the passengers to sit sideways in two rows with unobstructed views as the train circled the park. This train was renamed the “Holiday Red” and continues to operate daily at Disneyland in California. In 1966, Disney later created two additional sets of passenger cars called the Holiday Blue and Holiday Green. However, the Holiday Red is unique in that it is the only train utilizing the original Retlaw 2 cars. The car featured here is the number 202 car from the Holiday Red train.About Retro Rails Custom Model Trains I have been a model train enthusiast and model builder for over 60 years. When I retired as a mechanical engineer, my interest in both trains and models was renewed. I began building and collecting trains in both G and O scale. I found a special appeal in recreating the beautiful trains of Disneyland U.S.A. I discovered that few of these trains were available for purchase in G scale and I proceeded to build my own sets of Walt’s original steam engine passenger train conceptions. In addition to assembling cars and locomotives from fabricated and vintage model train parts, I also pursued recreating the unique graphics adorning the Disney trains. Utilizing professional graphics software, I’ve created a custom graphics set for each car that I build. I hope that you find interest in my creations and I look forward to sharing them with you.
